Getting protection after a life-changing illness

Some of us only start to consider getting different types of protection insurance – including life cover – after experiencing a life-changing illness.

For example, those who are diagnosed with cancer and overcome the cancer might start to wonder if they can still get life cover. If this sounds familiar, you’re certainly not alone. Read on to learn the key details about getting life cover after a life-changing illness.

Can you still get life cover after having cancer?

It is possible to get life cover after being diagnosed with cancer or another serious condition. In relation to cancer, the chances of getting approved for life cover will be based on the specifics of your condition and current health. Getting life cover after cancer is highly dependent on the type of cancer you had, the stage it progressed to and what type of treatment you received.

Is life cover more expensive after a serious illness?

Life cover quotes are provided by individual insurers and are based on a myriad of factors. When you ask for a life cover quote, it is likely that the insurer will ask about your age, general health, lifestyle and your medical history. They may even ask directly about life-changing diagnoses, such as cancer.

Because all of these things make up your life cover quote, it’s possible that your insurance policy may be more expensive due to the serious illness. But this won’t necessarily make the policies available unaffordable for the average person.

Tailormade life cover after a serious illness

Another possible option is to take out life cover that protects you in the way any other policy would but excludes pre-existing conditions from the cover, including a life-changing illness. This may or may not be preferential for some people. For example, you might be able to get life cover that protects you from everything but cancer or heart disease, making it more affordable.

Life cover and terminal illnesses

Many modern life insurance policies include a clause that allows you to access money if you are diagnosed with a terminal illness.

After being officially diagnosed, you could receive a lump sum payment to help you pay for care or experience things you always wanted before the illness develops further. Having a terminal illness clause like this is making more people consider life cover, even those of a younger cohort.
